How Do Brands Get Recommended by ChatGPT and AI Search?

ChatGPT and other AI answer engines recommend brands based on two inputs: what the model absorbed in training and what it retrieves from the live web when it searches. Brands get mentioned more often when they are described consistently on their own site and across many independent sources, when AI search crawlers can reach their pages, and when they publish specific, citable answers to the questions buyers ask.

How do AI answer engines decide which brands to mention?

Short answer: Answers come from a mix of training data, which changes only when a new model ships, and live retrieval, where the engine searches the web, reads a handful of pages and cites them.

Training data is the model's background knowledge. If a brand was widely and consistently described across the web before a model's training cutoff, the model may mention it without searching. A brand cannot edit this layer directly or quickly.

Live retrieval is where most practical gains happen. When ChatGPT searches, it draws on pages that OpenAI's search crawler can access; OpenAI states that sites blocking OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use retrieval from its search index plus "query fan-out," a set of related searches the model runs to gather more sources, and that a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear, per its guide to generative AI features.

The audience is large. OpenAI said on September 29, 2026 that ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, and Google reported in July 2026 that AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users.

What is known and what is speculative?

Short answer: Crawler access and search indexing are documented requirements; the value of third-party mentions and citable content is supported by research; llms.txt and most specific "ranking factors" are unproven.

No AI company publishes a ranking formula for brand recommendations. Here is how the common claims stand as of October 2026:

The correlation evidence is the most useful. Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks, and a later study found YouTube mentions correlated at roughly 0.737 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. In the academic GEO paper, adding statistics, quotations and source citations raised visibility by up to 40% in tests; keyword stuffing did not help.

  1. Make your entity unambiguous. Use one name, one category description, one founding date and one headquarters everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, directories and press materials. Add Organization structured data with links to your official profiles. If your name collides with another company, say so plainly. WVE's own llms.txt states that WVE LLC is not affiliated with Wave Life Sciences, which trades under the ticker WVE.
  2. Let AI search crawlers in. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot and other search crawlers in robots.txt. Decide on training crawlers such as GPTBot separately; OpenAI treats the two settings independently and says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply to search.
  3. Publish answer pages for real buyer questions. Lead with a direct answer, then support it with specific figures, dates and linked sources. Write each paragraph so it can be quoted on its own.
  4. Earn authentic third-party mentions. Reviews, press coverage, podcast and YouTube appearances, comparison articles and community discussions all add independent descriptions of your brand. Google warns that inauthentic mentions are less helpful than they seem, and the FTC bans fake reviews.
  5. Keep facts consistent and current. Publish your key figures with definitions and dates, and update every profile when something changes. Conflicting numbers give a model a reason to hedge or skip you.
  6. Treat llms.txt and Markdown pages as optional. The llms.txt proposal, first published in September 2024, is cheap to implement and useful to AI agents reading your site, but there is no public evidence it improves citations. WVE publishes both an llms.txt file and Markdown versions of its long-form pages for agents that use them.
  7. Measure monthly and adjust. Track what the engines actually say, as described below.

How do you measure AI visibility?

Short answer: Run a fixed set of buyer prompts across the major AI engines on a regular schedule and track how often you are mentioned, how often you are cited, what is said, and how you compare with competitors.

A workable measurement program has five parts:

  • A prompt set. Write 50 to 200 prompts that mirror how buyers ask, including category questions ("best X for Y"), comparisons and problem questions.
  • Answer share. The percentage of prompts where your brand is mentioned, tracked per engine.
  • Citation share. How often your own pages, rather than third-party pages, are cited as sources.
  • Accuracy and sentiment. Whether the answer describes you correctly, with current facts.
  • Competitive gap. Which competitors appear where you do not, and which sources the engines cite for them.

Answers vary between runs, so look at trends across repeated runs rather than single screenshots. Add first-party data too: Google Search Console now includes a Generative AI performance report, and analytics referral traffic from AI assistants shows which pages earn clicks.

Dedicated tools make this repeatable. AiGeo, WVE's generative engine optimization platform, tracks answer share, citation tracking, prompt coverage and competitive gap across AI models. Google cautions that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking systems, so treat any tool as a measurement aid, not a guarantee. Frequently asked questions

Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?

There is no documented way to pay for inclusion in ChatGPT's organic answers. OpenAI does run ads in ChatGPT, which are handled separately from organic results.

Not provably. Google Search ignores the file, and no major AI provider has publicly committed to using it as a ranking or citation signal, though it can help AI agents navigate a site.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Retrieval-based answers can change within days or weeks of new pages being indexed and cited. Training-data knowledge changes only when a new model is released, which can take months.

Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?

The two overlap heavily. Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, while other engines add their own crawlers and indexes, so crawler access, entity consistency and third-party mentions matter beyond Google.
